Description
Maker’s Mark is a wheated bourbon, devoid of rye in the mashbill. This is deemed crucial by the distillers, just as it was by the founder, generations ago, for creating soft, beautifully rounded bourbon as easy to enjoy in the cellars of St. James’s Street or the rolling hills of Loretto, Kentucky. When choosing the staves for this single cask bottling, I was keen to see a slightly darker, more brooding side of this joyous spirit, leaning more towards shared introspection than raucous indulgence. With notes of deep red spice, much darker than the iconic Maker’s Mark wax, this bourbon is very much a sipper for the cooler evenings. The corn sweetness interplays nicely with that derived from oak, all the while buttressed by cinnamon rolls, apricot jam on wholegrain toast and even touches of saffron. As always with this distillery, the cushioning on the finish is immaculate and assured.Rob Whitehead, Spirits Buyer, Berry Bros. & Rudd (June 2026)
